The WCAG Accessibility Regulations update their criteria in version 2.2

March 1, 2024

Version 2.2 of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2) represents a significant step forward in improving online accessibility.

This updated set of guidelines, presented by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) on October 5, 2023, focuses on addressing new needs and challenges to ensure that everyone can access and use online resources effectively.

So what does WCAG 2.2 entail? First of all, introduces nine new criteria that must be considered when auditing the accessibility of a website.

The new criteria specifically address issues related to navigation, data entry, minimum contrast, error messages, and navigation simplification, reflecting a broader and more comprehensive approach to online accessibility.

In addition to the inclusion of these new criteria, the elimination of criterion 4.1.1 stands out from the previous version, considered obsolete due to technological advances that have improved the handling of parsing errors by browsers and assistive technologies.
